Feel Better Fast

Have you ever had one of those days when you wake up and immediately feel like crap? You haven’t even started your day and you feel irritable, or, bummed out and you just want to stay in bed. In my house we have coined a word for exactly that, we call it, flumpy. Often when we wake up like that we are unable to shake it and the day just goes from bad to worse. You want to shake it off, but, it just seems to have grabbed a hold of you. It is at times like these that you need to know how to feel better fast.

How To Feel Better

How many of us truly know how to make ourselves feel better? For some people, the immediate thought is to have a drink, or, eat something. While this sounds good in theory, it doesn’t work. Every person should have a comprehensive go-to list of things that make them immediately feel better. While no two people’s lists are the same there are often numerous commonalities.

The first and most important thing you can do is try to talk yourself out of the mood you are in. Sounds simple doesn’t it? Well, it may not be simple, but, it is doable. You are in charge of your emotions and the only person that can turn them around is you. When you can’t talk yourself out of your mood it is time to pull out your go-to list and get to work.

Things That Bring You Joy

While only you will know what brings you joy some things seem to be universal.

  • Listen to your favourite song and blare it. Don’t just have it playing softly in the background, let it rip as loud as your speakers can take. Now dance around like nobody is watching (hopefully nobody is).
  • If you are in your car turn the music up and sing along (singing helps distract your mind and can change your mood, humming can have the same effect.
  • Learn to practice gratitude. When you are in a bad mood take 2 minutes to jot down some things you are thankful for. Gratitude has a huge impact on your mood.
  • Go for a walk outside (preferably in nature). Did you know nature and walking positively impact your mental health?
  • If you are at home you can watch a funny movie (this will change your mood very quickly).
  • Have a bath and fill the tub with glorious bubbles.
  • Call a friend. We all need to interact with people outside of our family and fellow workers.
  • You can also read a book to make you feel better.

Your list can be anything that brings you joy. Get creative and write down as many things as you can think of. The next time you are in a bad mood go to that list and see your mood changing.

Your Mood Comes From Your Mind

I want to close this article with a simple thought, “your mood comes from YOUR mind”. This means that you have the power to change your mood whenever you want. With that in mind, why stay miserable when you can shake it off and feel better? If you are looking for additional mood boosters you may enjoy the following article.
